Work is solving someone else’s problem. We mostly do so by collaborating with other people as well. Work is a social activity, which makes managing work a social practice, but management, in most of its current incarnations, is an institutionalised form of distrust and the acceleration of “technical” solutions that are proposed to solve work problems reflects how we’re deeply uncomfortable to face the social reality of work.

In knowledge work, where underlying complexity quickly exceeds the ability of any individual to realise valuable outcomes for stakeholders and/or customers, meaningful interaction is necessary to create capability. This requires that we believe that we can rely on each other or, in other words, that we trust each other. Without trust, there is no improvement and no innovation.

So why then is creating trust so hard? Why do trust models, that seem to work so wonderfully in simulations, consistently fail when applied in the real world? One answer to that is that trust is (more often than not) complex and contextual. The trust an infant has in its mother’s care is something completely different from the trust that a lover affords to a repeat offender’s efforts to improve. Trusting your boss not to throw you under the bus is entirely different from trusting your employee not to take advantage when letting them work from home.

In this talk I will share what things I have learned about building trust, both in successful teams, as well as in highly toxic corporate environments, and how a complexity-informed approach can help discover obstacles when fostering trust.
